The best mace for runners - what should you buy?

Should You Carry Mace While Jogging?

Picture this.

You’re running in your local park, smiling at moms with pushchairs. You take your usual route and run into a wooded area.

Suddenly, some stranger jumps out from behind a tree, and before you can yell for help, he has his hand clamped over your mouth.

A nightmare scenario, but sadly a real possibility in today’s world.

Police Sergeant Elle Martin recommends that joggers take their safety seriously and carry pepper spray, a whistle, and a cell phone in case of such emergencies.

It makes me angry that there’s a need for this article – Anybody should be free to run whenever and wherever they wish without the threat of attack.

But you have to live in the real world, and if you want to jog for exercise, I recommend that you buy a self-defense chemical spray and carry it with you whenever you go out.

Common sense safety tips for Runners

It’s common sense:

When you go running, don’t take unnecessary risks. Do everything in your power to stay safe.

Here’s a quick list of things you can easily do to make it less likely you’ll run into trouble:

  • Run with a partner
  • When possible, avoid running at night or very early mornings. Run only in daylight or in well lit areas.
  • If you like to run in the countryside, try to choose places where there are still lots of people around, like popular parks
  • Carry mace/pepper spray
  • Carry a whistle or high decibel personal alarm
  • Carry a cell phone
  • Let somebody know where and when you are jogging and when you expect to get back home
  • If followed, head toward the nearest populated area, business, or residence
  • Don’t stop to give directions or answer strangers’ questions
  • Trust your instincts. If you’re suspicious of a person, avoid them
  • Always inform the police if someone attempts to hurt you

What should you look for when choosing mace for self defense?

Looking to buy some mace to carry on your runs?

Here are some important things to look for when choosing the best brand and model of self-defense spray for you:

  • Effective chemical that disables your assailant
  • Multiple doses (in case you miss or there’s more than one of them)
  • Long range so that he can’t get close enough to touch you before you hit him
  • Handy to carry around when you’re running
  • Safety features to prevent accidental discharge

If you’re carrying something that meets all of those requirements, you should be well on your way to effective self defense while running.

Finding the best pepper spray for jogging

How should you carry your mace while running?

Hopefully, you’ll never find yourself in the terrible position of having to use your mace.

However, if you must use it there will be little warning, and you won’t have much time. So, you must keep your mace somewhere handy for immediate use.

The easiest place to keep your mace while you run is in your hand.

If it’s in your hand, you can deploy it immediately without delay. Attaching it to a wristband would also place your pepper spray in a handy position, but you will need time to grip it before you can use it.

Luckily, some sprays come with a handy carry strap to attach them to your hand.

Belt loop holsters are available with some products so that the mace can be worn attached to your belt.

This makes it super easy to access, but unfortunately means that you would need to wear a belt while jogging, which may be uncomfortable.

What's the best mace for runners?

There are special fanny packs designed for joggers to carry their essentials, and you could utilize one of these to carry your mace.

However, this would leave you vulnerable to somebody attacking you quickly because you would need time to fish for your pepper spray before you could use it.

An example of a belt especially designed for runners where you could keep your mace is the Flip Belt. FlipBelt Classic Running Belt | Running Fanny Pack for Women and Men | Non Chafing Waist Band Pack for Phone | Moisture Wicking Storage Belt | USA Company

Take your safety seriously

Have you decided to take positive action to protect yourself while out running?

Personally, I prefer to carry the Mace Brand Pepper Mace Spray, because the Jogger Model works best for me.

When I go jogging, I’m often out for over an hour, so carrying a spray becomes a pain.

The handy elastic strap on the Jogger Model means that I don’t have to think about it. It’s more expensive than some other products, but this is my life I’m talking about. Plus, it really isn’t THAT expensive.

If somebody attacks me, I want to know that my pepper spray is in my hands, effective, and ready to go.

Of course, you may feel that the longer range of the Sabre Red Pepper Gel makes you feel more secure, or you may find the more affordable price of the Sabre 3-in-1 Pepper Spray attractive.

All three models reviewed are among the highest rated, so choose the product that suits your lifestyle and requirements best.
